Tower defense servers run a wave-based minigame where mobs follow set paths and players place or upgrade defenses to stop them before they reach a goal. It’s usually done on custom maps with a shop/economy between waves, sometimes with co-op lanes, classes, or limited build zones rather than full freebuild.
