Servers with terrain protection let players claim chunks or regions so other players can’t break blocks, place blocks, open containers, or use redstone in that area without permission. It’s commonly used on survival and semi-vanilla servers to prevent griefing and theft, usually through plugins like GriefPrevention, Towny, or WorldGuard.
