Servers tagged 1.9 combat use the post-1.9 PvP system with attack cooldowns, crit timing, and shields, instead of old spam-click PvP. They’re usually on 1.9+ (often 1.16–1.20) and tend to balance kits, duels, factions, or survival PvP around shield play, axe disables, and slower, more positional fights.
