(2)1.8 Compatibility

Servers that are built to accept 1.8 clients (usually via ViaVersion/protocol hacks) so players can join from 1.8 while the server runs a newer version. They typically stick to 1.8-era PvP and movement expectations, but newer blocks/items may be limited or behave oddly for 1.8 players.
