Servers that run on or target Minecraft 1.8.9, usually to keep the old pre-1.9 PvP (no cooldown) and the movement/knockback people are used to. You’ll mostly see practice/duels, kit PvP, SkyWars/BedWars-style minigames, and other competitive modes, sometimes with newer content backported via plugins while keeping 1.8.9 combat.
