Feed the Beast usually means a modded survival server running an FTB modpack (or something very close), with lots of tech and/or magic mods, progression through quests or gated recipes, and a focus on building machines, automation, and big bases. Most of these servers use a launcher-based pack, have chunk claiming, and expect players to learn mod systems rather than stick to vanilla gameplay.
