Alpha servers are servers that run Minecraft Alpha-era versions (or close recreations), usually focused on nostalgia and old mechanics like classic terrain, limited blocks, and pre-release quirks. They tend to be small communities where the main draw is playing the game the way it worked in the Alpha days rather than modern features.
